May 2006

Despise difficult underlying conditions, the German short film scene is more heterogeneous and diverse today than ever before. The study sheds light on German short film production and distribution in the 2003 to 2005 period. In addition to aesthetic issues, the study analyses the areas of production, finance, marketing and distribution as well as screening and broadcast opportunities in cinemas and on television.

In separate chapters, the study deals with short film festivals, the role of film schools and colleges, short film as a cultural document, as well as the perspectives for short film as production and distribution becomes increasingly digitised.

The short film study has been published by AG Kurzfilm – the German Short Film Association – and was financially supported by the funding bodies, FFA, BKM and the Defa-Foundation.
